Why #WeGoBeyond as a B Corp
At CreateFuture, we're incredibly proud to be a certified B Corp - one of the many businesses that have made a pledge to make a positive impact on the planet and its people. We often get asked why we decided to embark on a B Corp journey, despite the work it takes to get the accreditation and maintain it.
It's a personal story, and I'd like to share it here.
The world we live in and the lives we lead are not conducive to good health. Our industry is particularly challenging. The Pandemic and Cost of Living Crisis has only exacerbated issues such as depression, anxiety, and other illnesses. It's difficult to thrive.
Over the years, I’ve faced numerous health issues such as depression, anxiety, fertility issues, back problems, IBS, an eating disorder, endometriosis and chronic UTIs. Being a female in the workplace came with its own set of challenges.
For a lot of my career I have not been thriving. I was often ill and became very good at hiding it.
I’m blessed to have been successful in my career despite all of this through determination, relentless self development, a privileged, white, middle class background and an amazing support network. Not everyone is that lucky.
After the first lockdown, now on the other side of 40, I had a textbook existential crisis. Cue an extended break from work, lots of inner work and soul searching about what I wanted from the rest of my life.
I arrived at a conclusion. I needed a more meaningful purpose than achieving the next life goal. I wanted to help as many people to thrive as possible. I was also fully committed to growing my business - CreateFuture, an innovation and design company - and making it successful.
My next question was - how can I do both?
This was the start of CreateFuture’s journey to becoming a more purpose-led business. I wanted to create a working environment for our team that I didn’t have earlier in my career. One that puts people over profit. One that cared, that made a difference.
Becoming a B Corp was the natural progression. Proof of our commitment to doing good. And a framework to help us identify where we could do better, and keep doing so.
I also believed that it made business sense. Happy, healthy teams do better work, are more productive and less likely to leave. It’s enabled us to attract like minded team members and clients who share our values.
It’s had commercial, creative and compassionate benefits. Our business is stronger as a result and ultimately more people are thriving. If one person is in better health because of our efforts, it’s been worth it.
If you’re considering becoming a B Corp and want to learn more about our journey, please feel free to get in touch.
