Top 10 tips to become a Creative Leader
On October 27th, CreateFuture sponsored a Ladies Wine & Design event at our 15 Queen Street office. These inclusive monthly events bring together an intimate group of ladies for casual conversations on creativity, business and life!
Our Managing Director & Founder Jessica led the evening with an insightful presentation about becoming a creative leader, based on her personal experience. She took us through her top 10 tips for reaching your full potential, whoever you are and whatever role you’re in. Read on to find out her helpful advice:
1. I’m not a creative
Don’t let job titles define you or your interests and abilities. Although Jessica doesn’t have ‘creative’ in her job title, she is a creative individual. As a Managing Director of a design and innovation company, she continuously uses creative problem solving and innovative ways of working. Everyone has skillsets beyond the confinements of your specific role, which should be recognised, used and appreciated by you and your team.
2. All skills have value
Drawing skills from all types of previous experiences or jobs is what allows you to excel at what you do. During her presentation Jessica said, “Today, I use more of the skills I acquired working in a restaurant than my entire degree.” And that sums it up nicely. No matter your background, you can pull ideas or relate to previous responsibilities and use this as momentum – every experience is a learning opportunity.
3. Keep a learning log
This tip is more tangible. Keep a personal log – whether digital or physical – to record your learnings and findings. Whether it be from attending an event, reading a book, listening to a podcast or working in a role, note down the insights that you’ve gained and your achievements. This will help your CV and allow you to celebrate how far you’ve come over time.
4. Fill your own cup
CreateFuture is a big advocate for putting your own needs first. That’s why Jessica developed the mantra, ‘happy, healthy teams’. By taking care of yourself, you’re able to perform at your best and be there for others – so it’s a win-win. Self care is critical for your development and well-being.
5. Do you.
Don’t change yourself or your values to fit the stereotype of your role. For example, you don’t have to be a bombastic leader if that’s not your natural style. Jessica shared with the group that although she’s the Founder of CreateFuture and people assume she’s confident and extrovert, she’s actually an introvert and was very shy for many years! Be authentic to yourself.
6. Your network is your net worth
The heading says it all. Investing in building your network from day one, whether it be with peers or mentors, is crucial for the success of your career and personal life. Put yourself out there; go to that conference, arrange that coffee meeting and pick the brain of an individual who can teach you something new. It can be intimidating, but you’ll thank yourself in the end.
7. Fake it ‘til you make it
Sometimes you have to take a risk and just go for it. You could surprise yourself and it may not go as badly as you think. It’s also very often that you can never fully prepare yourself for something before it actually happens. So take new experiences in stride and learn as you go.
8. Do your homework
Educating yourself is always beneficial. Put the effort in to learn about your industry and other people’s roles. Use this energy to your advantage… it can depreciate with age! Why not input this homework in your learning log from Tip #3 while you’re at it?
9. We’re not saving lives
Working in the creative industry is important but we’re not saving lives, so don’t stress over things too much. Whatever is worrying you now won’t be remembered in 12 months time. So look after yourself and take things day by day. Keep perspective where you can.
10. Growth is painful
Embrace discomfort. It can hurt and be messy but if it’s hard and you fail, then you’re learning. Otherwise, you’re being stagnant and not reaching your full potential. Take that leap of faith and feel the fear.
The lasting take away from the session was that no matter your background experience, you have the ability and resources to be your best self. All in all, it was a lovely evening with a group of creative ladies, insightful discussion and delicious wine! Follow the Ladies Wine & Design on socials to stay up-to-date with their future events.
